Hem your jeans with a twist
•Posted on October 30 2025
Imagine this:
You found the perfect pair of jeans. They hug you in all the right places, they feel super comfortable and they make all of your attributes look amazing. There is just one problem… Sadly, you were not gifted with long supermodel legs like Heidi Klum and you are just tired of all your jeans being too long. Fear not, we have a solution for you. This little DIY guide shows you how to hem your jeans in a cool way, keeping the original hem.

What you’ll need
A sewing machine Thread in your preferred colour Sewing pins Tape measure A pair of scissors Optional but nice: denim needle (size 90/14), iron and ironing board, chalk or washable pen.
Step-by-step: Keep the original hem
Turn inside out & decide the length Put the jeans on (with shoes you’ll wear most). Turn the legs inside out from the ankle up and mark how much you want to remove from the hem.
Fold to the target length Measure from the original hem upward and fold the hem up by half of the amount you want to shorten. (Example: If you need to remove 4 cm, fold up 2 cm. This keeps the original hem visible.)
Pin all the way around Smooth the fabric and pin around the leg, keeping the fold even. Check both legs match.
Sew the new hem Set a straight stitch (length 2.5–3.0). Sew right next to the original hem (on the folded edge), all the way around. Go slowly over bulky seam joins.
Remove pins carefully As you go or once stitched remove all pins.
Turn and press Turn the jeans right side out and fold the new hem down so the original hem sits at the bottom. Press with an iron for a crisp finish.
Voila! Get ready to wear your new customised jeans.
